Former NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr. Edgar Mitchell — a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission — claims aliens exist.
He says extraterrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions — but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.
Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview in Birmingham, England, that sources at NASA who had had contact with aliens described the beings as "little people who look strange to us."
He said supposedly real-life ET's were similar to the traditional image of a "small gray" — short, slight frame, large eyes and large head.
Mitchell also claimed human technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as the aliens' and "had they been hostile," he warned "we would be been gone by now."
Dr Mitchell, who has a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering and a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics claimed Roswell was real and similar alien visits continue to be investigated.
He told the astonished Kerrang! radio host Nick Margerrison: "This is really starting to open up. I think we're headed for real disclosure and some serious organisations are moving in that direction."
Mr Margerrison said: "I thought I'd stumbled on some sort of astronaut humour but he was absolutely serious that aliens are definitely out there and there's no debating it."
Officials from NASA, however, were quick to play the comments down.
In a statement, a spokesman said: "NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe.
'Dr Mitchell is a great American, but we do not share his opinions on this issue.'

The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth
Quote:
THE HORRIFYING TRUE STORY OF A GOVERNMENT - AUTHORIZED CAMPAIGN OF DISINFORMATION THAT DEFINED AN ERA OF ALIEN PARANOIA AND DESTROYED ONE MAN'S LIFE.
In 1978, Paul Bennewitz, an electrical physicist living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, engaged in some aggressive radio monitoring of the nearby Sandia Labs, then managed by the Department of Defense. When he became convinced that the strange lights hovering over the labs and Kirtland Air Force Base signaled the vanguard of an extraterrestrial alien invasion, he began writing TV stations, newspapers, senators -- and even President Reagan -- to alert them.
For the most part Bennewitz received form-letter replies, but Air Force investigators paid him a visit, as did Bill Moore, author of the first book on the Roswell incident. Before long Moore -- then a new force in civilian UFO research -- was tapped by a group of intelligence agents and a deal was struck: Moore was to keep tabs on Bennewitz while the Air Force ran a psychological profile and disinformation campaign on the unsuspecting physicist. In return, Air Force Intelligence would let Moore in on classified UFO material.
This is Bennewitz's harrowing tale, told by fringe-culture historian Greg Bishop. It is the troubling account of the custom-made hall of smoke and mirrors that eventually drove Bennewitz to a mental institution, as well as the story of the explosive propagation of disinformation that began in 1979 and reverberates through the UFO community and pop culture to this day.

I'm going to say right off the bat here that I'm frustrated.
Today is the "target date" for collecting signatures. July 25th. So I'm supposed to believe that it's just a big coincidence that Mitchell went on the radio when he did and it ended up on FoxNews?
The is so classic. Does everyone see what is most likely happening? If they did collect the needed signatures, this is a perfect cointelpro bottle of champagne crashing of the bow of a large boat meant to sink. If they didn't get the signatures, Mitchell is playing the role he was meant to play at the last available opportunity.
I'd assume myself paranoid if this wasn't so damn predictable to me.
So here we are. The skeptics who took a lot of crap, as usual, for warning others about the possible implications of Mitchell's involvement...
WERE RIGHT!
That certainly doesn't make us happy. In fact I'm kind of furious and venting right now about the fact that this must be the fifth time that myself and others have questioned an event coordinated by Les, and after taking a fair amount of crap for it, found our concerns to be valid.
Is the movement learning the lessons that present themselves? Les Jamieson or not, some of us have become pretty good at pointing out potential problems that we and others face.
If that experience doesn't matter to others, it might be a waste of our time to keep expressing these opinions. The red flags are ignored. The warning made to appear paranoid or overly cautious.
I'll probably keep at it, but damn, what I wouldn't give to find that people were starting to be more concerned with the warnings presented to them by people who really care about preventing the movement from walking into pot holes. _________________ http://911truthburnout.blogspot.com

Well, to be totally accurate it's their third. First the date was June 3rd or 4th. Then they moved it to early July, and finally, at what I can only assume to be the last minute, July 25th.

Now - is anyone going to publicly demand that Les demand that this nutjob steps down as a commissioner?
Unless they collected a good deal more than 30,000 signatures by now, I doubt this would be necessary.
Here's a link to a video of an interview with Les from a year ago at which point he was trying to get this off the ground for the last election cycle. In the video he admits that even after they get 30,000 signatures and then have 60 days to obtain 15,000 more, that the mayor could still keep the initiative off the ballot.

And it appears that the idea may not have been his own.
